On Tuesday, a sex tape of a couple going at it in a Beijing location of Japanese clothing retailer Uniqlo went viral on social media. The footage spread across social networking sites like WeChat and Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, with censors scrambling to keep images under wraps. However, even the most staunch moralists have to admit that once something gets out on the internet, it’s pretty much impossible to contain, let alone squash entirely.
Although the couple pulled off a hell of a coup when it comes to exhibitionism and dressing room sex, neither the brass at Uniqlo not the Chinese government are thrilled.
“The vulgar video had spread like a virus online and clashed with socialist core values,” Xu Feng, a director at the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), said in a quote from the Global Times newspaper, as relayed by The Guardian.
Feng also vowed that the government would “continue to crack own on vulgar materials online and safeguard the cyber environment.” Yeah, good luck cleaning up the vast cesspool that is the internet. That’s totally a winnable war.
The incident also put Uniqlo in a position of having to defend itself from claims that it masterminded the sex tape as a viral marketing maneuver, which would have been a hell of a misguided ad given that the chick is wearing no clothing whatsoever.
“We would like to remind the public to uphold social morality and use our fitting rooms in a correct and proper way,” a rep for the retailer said viaShanghai Daily. “We also firmly deny some online allegations saying the video is our publicity stunt.”
As for the couple, the government is investigating who they are and is on the hunt to arrest them. One time a public jumbotron operator endured 15 days in the slammer and a $400 fine for accidentally broadcasting porn on a big screen in a city square. So, we imagine people making the porn in public won’t fare much better. Even in the states Kendra Sunderland is facing hefty legal charges for filming a solo sex tape on her campus library. However, I sincerely hope the couple manages to evade the long arm of the law.
Anyway, here’s the footage that pissed off the Chinese government. I shouldn’t have to stress that you should not watch this in your cube, unless your cube is in the Pornhub office.
